Meaning to Learn: Bootstrapping Semantics to Infer Syntax

چکیده
Context-free grammars cannot be identified in the limit from positive examples (Gold 1967), yet natural language grammars are more powerful than context-free grammars and humans learn them with remarkable ease from positive examples (Marcus 1993). Identifiability results for formal languages ignore a potentially powerful source of information available to learners of natural languages, namely, meanings. This paper explores the learnability of syntax (i.e. contextfree grammars) given positive examples and knowledge of lexical semantics, and the learnability of lexical semantics given knowledge of syntax. The long-term goal is to develop an approach to learning both syntax and semantics that bootstraps itself, using limited knowledge about syntax to infer additional knowledge about semantics, and limited knowledge about semantics to infer additional knowledge about

The Role of Syntax in Vector Space Models of Compositional Semantics
Modelling the compositional process by which the meaning of an utterance arises from the meaning of its parts is a fundamental task of Natural Language Processing. In this paper we draw upon recent advances in the learning of vector space representations of sentential semantics and the transparent interface between syntax and semantics provided by Combinatory Categorial Grammar to introduce Com...
متن کاملBootstrapping in miniature language acquisition
Given the difficulties in learning meanings of words by observing the referent, it has been suggested that children use the syntactic context of the word to predict part of its meaning, a hypothesis known as syntactic bootstrapping. Semantic bootstrapping is the opposite theory that the knowledge of semantics helps in acquiring syntax. While there is evidence that children can apply their knowl...
متن کاملA Bayesian Framework for Cross-Situational Word-Learning
For infants, early word learning is a chicken-and-egg problem. One way to learn a word is to observe that it co-occurs with a particular referent across different situations. Another way is to use the social context of an utterance to infer the intended referent of a word. Here we present a Bayesian model of cross-situational word learning, and an extension of this model that also learns which ...

متن کاملChildren’s Early Understanding of Mass–Count Syntax: Individuation, Lexical Content, and the Number Asymmetry Hypothesis
How does mass–count syntax affect word meaning? Many theorists have proposed that count nouns denote individuals, whereas mass nouns do not (Bloom, 1999; Gordon, 1985; Link, 1983), a proposal that is supported by prototypical examples of each (table, water). However, studies of quantity judgments in 4-year-olds and adults demonstrate that some mass nouns (furniture) do denote individuals (Barne...
